What is the Difference Between Full-cassette, Semi-cassette and Open Awnings?

Looking to find the perfect awning for your garden or patio? The first thing you need to know is what the difference is between full-cassette, semi-cassette and open awnings. Awnings are designed to last for many years so you’ll want to make sure you’ve made the right decision.

The cassette is the casing which the awning retracts into. This is to help it protect the awnings from rain, dirt and anything else that might naturally happen to them. It’s important to understand that these also come in a variety of costs which might affect your choice depending on your budget. Take a look at what the differences are between awnings and their cassettes.

Full-Cassette Awnings

The full-cassette awning is designed to enclose the awning fabric, arms and roller mechanism to protect them from all types of weather. When the awning is fully closed, the fabric rolls inside the cassette completely and the arms fold inwards. This protects the awning fabric and moving parts from the wind and the rain and provides a neat and tidy aesthetic.

One of the most popular full cassette awnings is the award-winning Markilux 6000. The unique arm technology is made of high-tech fibres designed to keep your awning safe and secure.

Semi-Cassette Awnings

Providing partial cover for the awning fabric, arms and mechanisms, semi-cassette awnings are perfect for more sheltered gardens and patios.

The Markilux 1600 Stretch is the perfect choice for maximum shading on a budget. Winner of the iF Design Award, the awning is elegant and robust whilst being dynamically rounded coverboard helps to provide the appearance of the awning being fully cassette.

Open Awnings

Not always classified as the entry-level awnings, open awnings are perfect for those who are on a tight budget.

They don’t provide the protection that full or semi cassette awnings do. They are particularly suitable for locations which have under wall projections, overhanging roofs or balcony ceilings as these will protect your awning from the wind or rain.

They still provide the same amount of protection that other awnings do and protect them from the sun and UV rays.

Our Markilux 1300 is ideal for those who are looking for protection in their garden whilst being on a budget.

Difference Between Material?

When choosing the awning, you’ll also need to consider the different types of material that are available. With a full cassette awning, your material will require less maintenance than open awning due to the protection of the case. The fabric can also suit different types of homes.

The two most common types of awning fabrics are aluminium and outdoor fabrics.

  • Outdoor Fabrics will require more maintenance but are available in a wide range of colours.
  • Aluminium awnings are sturdy but have a limited amount of customisations. They will also require less maintenance.

Which is the Right Awning For You?

When choosing the right awning for you, you’ll need to consider many different factors. What is your budget? If you have a larger budget, you’ll want to consider a full awning whereas if you have a smaller budget, an open awning might be the best choice for you.

Another consideration would be the size of your patio or garden. If you are unsure what type of awning is right for you, get in touch with one of our friendly team members for more information.
